Stubbin Wood - Primary Satellite Consultation OPEN

CONSULTATION ON PROPOSAL TO OPEN A SATELLITE PROVISION FOR 60 PRIMARY-AGED PUPILS BY STUBBIN WOOD SCHOOL

    Proposal:

To create a new satellite provision for 60 primary-aged SEND pupils at Stubbin Wood. The provision will be accommodated in a new purpose-built school building located next to the school’s existing nursery provision on Burlington Avenue, NG20 9AD.

    Background:

Stubbin Wood School & Nursery is a special school in Derbyshire on the border with Nottinghamshire, and was rated Good by Ofsted at its last inspection.  The school offers 262 places across numerous sites, which includes the nursery, located 4 minutes drive from the main school site. Pupil places include an additional primary satellite provision in Mansfield commissioned by Nottinghamshire County Council, and post-16 provision in Chesterfield, commissioned by Derbyshire County Council.

The school is the largest special school in Derbyshire with a reputation for excellent, responsive care to support the needs of its students and there is a high demand for places. We have been working closely with Derbyshire County Council to find solutions for the demand for SEND places locally, and have developed a plan for additional places within a new building on the nursery site in Shirebrook.

    Proposal Detail:

The proposal is to create a new satellite provision which will cater for 60 primary-aged pupils with SEND, along with the creation of 60 additional places. Those attending the new satellite provision will be made up of new and existing primary-aged pupils, with a small number of pupils relocating from the main site.

The proposal includes the construction of a new building adjacent to the nursery building on Burlington Avenue. The new accommodation will be purpose-built for primary-aged pupils and their needs, and will provide continuity of provision for some pupils who are successfully placed within the main school, following their time in nursery. Any children who relocates from the main site to the new provision, will benefit from excellent new facilities, designed to meet their needs.

The new provision will comprise of 6 classes, each with its own classroom and outside space and with access to additional shared outside space. Classes will be mixed primary, and will be organised according to need. The satellite site will be a full part of Stubbin Wood School. Pupils will be taught by Stubbin Wood staff and will be taught the Stubbin Wood curriculum. They will travel by dedicated transport, which will drop them off and collect them from the provision.

There will be a phased opening plan to the provision. Initially, the plan is to open with 15 pupils, with an additional 15 pupils one full term later. The site would then rise to 60 within 1 year of opening. Stubbin Wood School does not anticipate any detrimental effect on those students already enrolled, and the number of pupils accessing the main site will not rise above the current number.

We are required to consult on the proposal and capture the views of all stakeholders. We would appreciate your support and ask that you respond to the consultation via this form.

    Consultation Timeline:

The consultation is open between Tuesday 25th March and Wednesday 23rd April, and we are keen to hear thoughts from all of those involved in the school, the wider local community and our local neighbours.
